... What we're doing

We're back home in the UK after spending 9 months travelling between September 2007 and June 2008. We took the kids out of school and travelled around Europe and Asia covering Paris, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, Bali, Cambodia, Bangkok, Australia, China and Japan. That's what you can mostly read on my blog.

... Me

My name is Ian. I have a lovely wife, Jenny, and two fantastic kids. My daughter, R*, is 12, and my son, K*, is 9. I don't use their full names since Jenny thinks some weirdo might want to track them down. For that reason, I keep some details in this weblog a bit vague such as exactly where we live. However, here's a quick personal history:

  • born in July, 1963, in the capital city of a very small and poor country
  • emigrated to England in 1964 living around Bishop's Stortford
  • emigrated to Canada in 1970 and settled in Victoria, British Columbia
  • earned a degree in Computer Science in 1987 and started writing software
  • moved to Vancouver and married Jenny in 1988
  • job transfer moved me back to the United Kingdom in 1994 working as an IT consultant
  • became a Dad in 1995 and the world changed forever
  • quit my regular day job in April, 2003, and took an extended sabbatical

We originally planned the stint in the UK to be a temporary job transfer but we're still here living near Reading in the county of Berkshire. We do eventually plan to move back to Victoria or Vancouver but we're not sure when. I like the UK.

...this weblog

A BrainNoodle is just my musings about any old topic. If it's a serious topic, I'll post it under Serious Concerns. That's for stuff about globalisation, education, health, politics and things like that. During my Internet travels, I often find amusing, cool or weird things so I post those under Diversions. When I watch, buy or read stuff, I'll often write-up my opinion on it in Reviews.

For family and friends, I write about my family and personal life under, you guessed it, Personal. That's probably boring if you don't know me. I also write about the places we go and do and file it under Out And About. That includes anything from local events and restaurants to further travels abroad.

I've written a few articles. Most of these are Travelogues from our trips over the last couple of years. But there's a few miscelleneous articles that I've lumped together and called Experiences. Instead of writing articles, I'm also experimenting with hypertext writing over in my Wiki.

I'm a software developer by trade but you won't find any writings here about computers or technology. I have another weblog where I keep all my technical stuff.

It's really very easy for the time to just fly by. Here on BrainNoodles, you can get a good idea of just where it goes. I'm always happy to hear from random people who just happen drop by and read this website. Feel free to Contact Me.
