A Point System for Earning Computer Time

Our kids love the computer. They can spend many hours playing games. We wanted to limit it and hook into this motiviation to get them to do educational things we wanted them to do. So we invented a point system. They earn points doing various activities and they get to spend it on game time on the computer (PC, Xbox, Nintendo DS).  They can do other things on the computer for free but playing a game costs points. Overall, it worked as a way to limit computer time but the children didn't try many of the different activites as we hoped. We...

StrengthsFinder

I did this online personality test called "StrengthFinder" where you're asked to compare pairs of statements about yourself and rank which one is more acceptable. When finished, it tells you your top five strengths and suggests you should arrange your job to play to your strengths. Sounds reasonable. Got up at the ungodly hour of 6am and out of the house by 7am so I could shoot down to Castle Combe and be there by 8am. Signed in waiving all my rights to sue the organisers. Also decided I was going to run on the track with no car insurance (yes I was...

More Than Pictures

Imagine you could watch a video of an interview of your great grandmother or great grandfather. Wouldn't it be great to hear their story in their own words? And wouldn't it be great if your children could see it too? And their children? This thought came to me after my grandmother passed away about ten years ago.  She kept in touch with everyone through good ol'fashioned snail mail and she knews tons and tons of stories. She had pretty much dedicated her entire life to both immediate and extended family. She was the hub of it. And I very much regret...
